One of the largest specialty plant societies in the world, the ARS is a non-profit organization of over 20,000 members and 350 local chapters. Most ARS members are home gardeners who enjoy growing roses and want to expand their knowledge of rose culture.

ARS Membership Benefits

As an ARS member, you'll get the most out of your gardening experience with quality information about the latest techniques and products available. As a regular member you'll receive:

  • Eleven issues of The American Rose magazine. This four-color publication provides timely, informative articles and stunning rose photography. It's the only magazine dedicated exclusively to the culture, use, and history of roses.
  • The Handbook for Selecting Roses is mailed in December and rates all commercially available roses by horticultural class, color and performance.
  • The American Rose Annual is also mailed in December. It is a comprehensive yearbook packed with information, rose details and an analysis of how each new rose has grown in specific areas of the U.S.
  • There are numerous other services of the ARS.

Additional ARS Services

  • Operating cooperative research programs at various colleges and experimental stations regarding rose-growing problems.
  • Maintaining the Rose Registration System, which has been designated by the International Horticultural Congress as the International Registration Authority for roses.
  • Maintaining a complete "source list" of all commercially available roses.
  • Maintaining a complete listing of Consulting Rosarians throughout the United States and providing information valuable for their training as CRs.
  • Accrediting qualified Rose Show Judges and cooperating with Districts in conducting schools for Judges.
  • Maintaining a national listing of public and private gardens open to the general public.
  • Sponsoring an annual photography contest.
  • Publishing four specialized quarterlies dealing with exhibiting roses, miniature roses, old garden roses and rose arranging.
  • Sponsoring two National Rose Meetings and Rose Shows each year (in the Spring in the North and in the Fall in the South) and assisting with District rose conferences and shows.
  • Assisting local societies with rose show supplies, books, program materials and other information related to the complete operation of a rose society.
  • Granting prizes and awards for outstanding achievements in the rose world.
