HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIA ROSE SOCIETY
2011 update
Compiled by
Gary A. Ritchie
ORS Historian
The Olympia Rose Society was
organized in 1954 by a group of local rose enthusiasts. Dr. J.M.
Burkhart served as its first president. There were, at that time 35
members, 20 of whom were also members of the American Rose Society. The
local dues were $1.00 per year. Membership has grown over the years. In
1985, there were 73 members, in 1998 there were 94 in 2001 there were
74, with 84 in 2002 and 2003. In 2005 dues were $12.50 per household and
membership was approximately 60 households.
On March 10, 1971, the
Society adopted its first bylaws and these were revised April 8, 1977,
April 4, 1986, and again in March 1991. The Society was incorporated
July 7, 1980. It is an affiliated club of the American Rose Society.
It does not operate in any manner resulting in pecuniary profit or gain
by its members. The purpose of the society is to encourage and promote
the general interest in the cultivation and improvement of the standard
of excellence of the rose for all people.
Meetings were held at the
YMCA Friendship Hall from 1954 to 1962, rent for which was $7.00.
Meetings were moved to the State Museum Carriage House until 1965, rent
$3.00 per month. From here they moved to the Washington Natural Gas
Company until 1970; then to Olympia Federal Savings and Loan until 1977.
The group moved to the Olympia Community Center in 1978 and met there
regularly until that facility was closed down in 1988.
Upon the opening of the new
Community/Senior Center in downtown Olympia, the Society moved its
monthly meetings to that modern facility. Owing to concerns about safety
in downtown Olympia, the Society began meeting at the Tumwater Hill
Elementary School beginning in January 1993. At that time it was decided
to hold the Board Meetings just prior to the general meeting. Most
business is conducted at the Board meeting, which helps to keep the
business portion of the general meeting to under 30 minutes to allow
more time for the program and for socializing. In 2002 the Society began
meeting at the Schmidt Mansion, following its renovation.
In April 2, 1957 a committee
for selecting a name for a monthly bulletin reported that it had
selected three candidate names from a list submitted by the members, and
the members were asked to select one of these names by ballot. The name
"Rose Clippings”, submitted by Mrs. Jack Graler, was selected and she
was awarded a rose bush.
"Rose Clippings", a monthly
publication, is sent to all members of the local Society and editors of
other rose societies in the Pacific Northwest. The first bulletin was
written by Miss Harriet Sanford. Aleen Kearns was editor from 1959 to
1963. Mrs. Richard Barber was editor from November 1963 to October 1982.
Mike McCloud was editor from January 1982 to January 1996, at which time
Deborah Erickson and her husband George Boozer took over this important
responsibility. In September, 2001 editorial duties were transferred to
Regina Johnson and Karen Backman.
Jan Ignash became editor and
publisher in 2011, when Ms. Johnson began her two-year term as
President.
The first annual rose show
was held at the Community Center on Wednesday, July 6, 1955. It was open
to the public from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Mrs. Stanley W. Brown was
chairman and there were twelve prizes and awards. Colonel Louis M. Haas
of Tacoma was winner of the sweepstakes trophy with the rose "Picture".
In February, 1961 the Society accepted the Olympia Parks and Recreation
Department as co-sponsors of the rose show and the shows were held at
the Community Center from 1955 to 1981 at no cost to the Society.
In 1981 the Rose Show was
moved to the South Sound Mall where the Society received a $400
sponsorship per show from the Mall. In 1998 the show was moved again.
Rose Show Chairman, Jack Kiley, led an effort to establish Capital Mall
as the show location owing to the rapid decline of South Sound Mall. It
was a good thing, too, because on the morning of the show (June 27) a
pipe broke in South Sound Mall and the entire place was flooded! For the
1998 show a new challenge class was establish to honor the memory of
Jake DeHaven.
Following the show Jack
Kiley prepared a report to the Society in which he outlined it’s
successes and opportunities for improvement. A summary was published in
the September 1998 “Clippings”. In sum, the report noted that, despite
some logistical problems, the show was an unqualified success. Jack
suggested that the show date be changed to either July or September,
local businesses should be asked to sponsor certain trophies, and we
should discuss with mall management the possibility of revenue-producing
events in conjunction with our show. Jack Kiley was show chairman again
in 1999 and the show was held again at Capital Mall. Despite the show’s
unqualified success, it was marred by the tragic passing of Mr. Don
Thorpe of Vancouver WA, who suffered a cardiac arrest during the show
and passed away several weeks later.
The year 2000 show was held
in conjunction with Olympia’s annual “Lakefair” event and featured
Ciscoe Morris, a noted Northwest gardener. Show Chair was Deborah
Erickson. The 2002 show was again held at the Capital Mall (now called
the “Westfield Shoppingtown”. Sally Kopp was chair. Following the show
Marian Seeley and Esther Mathews hosted a pot-luck at their lovely home.
Owing to rising costs of holding the show at Westfield, and other
issues, an effort was undertaken in 2002 to find a new location for
future shows.
In 2003 the show venue was
moved to the Olympia Community Center at 222 Columbia St. N, on the
corner of Capitol Way and Olympia, Street. The show was also shortened
from two days to one day. At this location, all the roses were exhibited
in one large room that also contained the trophy table. This allowed for
a much easier set-up and take-down. The show was a success and most
members agreed that this venue was superior to that of the mall. Jack
Kiley was able to procure a $400 grant to help subsidize the event.
Following the show we adjourned to Marian Seeley’s home for a pot luck
and discussion of the show – what went well, what didn’t, how can we do
a better job next year? The 2004 and 2005 show were also held at the
Olympia Community Center.
In 2006 Show Chairman Jack
Kiley proposed a completely new venue for the rose show. Rather holding
it at a Community Center or mall, which costs the Society several
hundred dollars, Jack negotiated with the Janamar Company to hold the
show at “Jubilee”, which is one of their retirement communities in
Lacey. An outstanding success, the show was held in the ballroom of the
Jubilee clubhouse and was attended by literally hundreds of Jubilee
residents. Jubilee also provided a BBQ lunch for all in attendance. In
return, a team of ORS members, lead by Patricia Ream, constructed 250
miniature corsages that were handed out to delighted Jubilee residents.
Another innovation in 2006
was a “new kind of trophy”. Instead of the customary array of vases,
plates, chafing dishes, etc., each winner was presented with a framed
digital photo of his/her entry. This was accomplished by a team of
folks. Rich Baer shot the digital images. Barb and Bruce Lind made high
quality prints from the images, and inserted the name of the winner and
the rose, and other information. Beage Kiley then framed each photo and
placed it appropriately on the trophy table. All these awards were
recorded and coordinated by Karen Backman and her crew.
At the conclusion of the
show, Jubilee members were invited to take the roses home with them. All
the roses disappeared within moments – saving us a considerable clean up
effort. Jubilee was delighted, we were delighted, the contestants were
delighted – and we were invited back in 2007. The “heavy lifting” before
and after the show was organized and coordinated by Ron Backman and Pat
Ream and their crew of merry men (and merry women). Following the show,
Wayne and Lois Parpala graciously hosted a pot luck at their beautiful
home on Puget Sound. The 2008 and 2009 shows were held again at Jubilee.
The ballroom had been enlarged by about 30% giving plenty of space in
which to hold the show. The roses in 2008 were particularly lovely owing
to a cool moist spring that put little stress on the roses. The “Court
of Honor” was among the best ever seen in these parts. A post-show pot
luck was again hosted by Wayne and Lois Parpala at their beautiful home
on Puget Sound.
In the year 2010 the rose
show venue was moved from Jubilee (Jubilee had gone out of business
owing to the bad economy) to St. Michael’s church in Olympia. The church
is easily reached from I-5 and offers a large exhibition area and a
convenient and roomy staging area. Tables and lunches were provided by
the church. The show was closed down at 5:00 pm and all the roses were
collected and made available to the 5:00 Mass attendees, who took them
all.
In 2010 another trophy
innovation was tried. Photos of the winning roses were taken by famed
rose photographer Rich Baer of the Portland Rose Society, then
transferred onto T-shirts during the show
using
the services of John Vlastelica from Lakeside Graphics, Olympia. These
were completed and
awarded by 2:00. Each shirt contained the words “Olympia Rose Society
Rose Show 2010”, a photo of the winning rose, and below it the name of
the rose.
The Parpalas again hosted a
post-show pot luck at their beautiful home.
In 2011 Jack Kiley was again
show chairman and the show was held at St. Michael’s Church. T-short
trophies were again offered. Owing to timing of the show and attendance
by many exhibitors from both north and south, the 2011 show was one of
the best ever with a large number of roses of outstanding quality. A
post-show pot luck dinner was again graciously hosted by Wayne and Lois
Parpala.
The rose shows have had many
themes over the years. The theme in 1985 was “Summer on the Sound”. In
1986 “Let’s go Expo”, 1987 was “Summer Time is Rose Time”. “Roses on
the Oregon Trail,” was in the theme 1988, and in 1989 “A century of
Roses”, in conjunction with the Washington Centennial. In 1990 the theme
was “Roses in a Changing World”, in 1991 “Tie the knot with Roses” in
1992, “Roses Old and New in ‘92,” and “Rose Fever ‘93”. The theme for
the 1998 show was “Rose Gardens of the Pacific Northwest”, in 1999 it
was “Roses in the 21st Century” and in 2000 it was “La Fiesta
del Rosa”. The Theme for the 2001 show was “2001 – A Rose Odyssey” and
in 2002 it was “2002 - The Year of the Rose” and in 2003 it was “A
Capitol Rose Show”. The 2004 show, which was the 50th annual
rose show, had its theme “A Golden Celebration”. The theme for the 2005
show was “A Capitol Celebration!” The theme for the 2006 show was "A
Jubilee Celebration," for 2007, "Dreams Come True!" and “Good people,
Good Times” for 2008. The 2009 show was dedicated to the memory of
Marian Seeley and was themed “In Celebration”. ”The 2010 theme was “A
Fountain of Roses” remembering the beautiful fountains at Butchart
Gardens on Vancouver Island. The 2011 show, which was held on the Fourth
of July weekend, was “Let Freedom Ring”.
The tenth Pacific
Northwest District convention was held in Olympia, in conjunction with
the fourth annual rose show of the Society. In March, 1958 the Mayor of
Olympia agreed to set aside two days as "wear a rose day" for members
of the group who arranged to hand out roses to people on the streets
during two days. Members were asked to contribute extra rose blooms.
This convention was held at the Tyee Motor Inn in Tumwater.
The District Convention was
hosted by Olympia again in 1973, 1989 and 2005. The 1989 Convention was
particularly special in that it coincided with the Washington State
Centennial Celebration. The convention was held at the Westwater Inn.
The Centennial Rose Garden was dedicated at this convention (see
below). Steve McCulloch was President and Dr. Wayne Parpala was Show
Chairman, Jim Pressley chaired the Convention Committee, and Dr. Gary
Ritchie headed up the Centennial Garden Dedication Ceremony.
Washington’s First Lady, Jean Gardner, was the honored guest speaker.
The 2005 district show took
a different format from earlier shows. Held again at the Olympia
Community Center, it was a one-day show and was not associated with the
district convention. Jack Kiley was show chairman. A traditional pot
luck dinner followd at Marian Seeley’s home.
In June, 1959 Bernadette
Hong, chairman of the City Beautification Program, in connection with
the World's Fair to be held in Seattle in 1961, suggested that the
Olympia Rose Society make plans for establishing a rose garden at the
Community Center and that members give demonstrations on planting,
pruning, spraying, etc. in connection with the garden. It was moved and
carried that the Olympia Rose Society undertake this project - details
to be worked out later. At the February 12, 1960 meeting it was
announced that Dr. Burkhart and Austin McClintock had laid out the
plots and that the City had agreed to prepare the beds and provide the
water and fertilizer, and that the Olympia Rose Society would be
responsible for planting, pruning, and spraying. Mrs. Nat Schoen,
President of the American Rose Society at that time, was guest speaker
at the meeting and she brought with her seven dozen rose bushes. In
1961 there was talk of moving these beds to Priest Point Park. However,
after due deliberation, this idea was abandoned.
In 1989 a logo contest was
initiated by the Board of Directors. The contest was won by Gary
Ritchie and announced at the 1990 Christmas Banquet, which was held at
the Schmidt Mansion. This logo adorns the Visitors’ Guide to the
Centennial Garden, the monthly Rose Clippings and the front page
of this ORS History. In 2005 a new logo and patch were fashioned
by Northwest Embroidery. The logos were available as patches that could
be sewn on baseball caps, jackets, or vests.
In 1988, the new
Community/Senior Center having been completed, the City of Olympia
closed down the old Community Center. This meant that the garden had to
be moved. A new site was offered by the Olympia-Tumwater Foundation on
its Schmidt Mansion grounds across Custer Way from the Olympia Brewery.
A project to relocate the garden was proposed by the Society in
conjunction with the Washington State Centennial Celebration. Then
President, Gary Ritchie, lead this effort, which culminated in the
establishment of the Centennial Rose Garden. Joy Ayres, then Secretary
Treasurer, with his wife, Val, raised approximately $8,000 to finance
the project, soliciting donations from private individuals, businesses
and government agencies. The Garden was dedicated on June 23, 1989 with
Washington First Lady Mrs. Jean Gardner presiding. It contains a
collection of about 100 varieties of roses - roughly half of them Old
Garden Roses. Some date back to Roman times, some to Oregon Trail
times, and others to the time of Washington Statehood.
In 1991 the ORS Chapter
bylaws were amended to create a standing committee called the Centennial
Garden Foundation. This committee is responsible for carrying out
maintenance and financial affairs of the Garden. Beginning in 1994
annual rose bush sales have been held in conjunction with the spring
pruning of the Centennial Garden. Number 1½ roses are purchased in bulk
from Edmonds Roses and sold for about $7.00 each. This event, which has
been coordinated by the Centennial Garden Foundation, has earned several
hundred dollars annually for garden maintenance. Esther Mathews, Marian
Seeley, Val and Joy Ayres and other members have done the lions share of
the work on the rose sale over the years. In 1994 an 8-foot high green
chain link fence was constructed around the main portion of the garden
to protect it from the ravages of the local deer population.
During the year 2000, the
Olympia Tumwater Foundation’s new General Manager, Joe Reder, announced
plans for a major renovation of the Schmidt Mansion to include grounds
and gardens. This plan would result in the relocation of the Centennial
Garden to a site slightly south of its present location. He asked
Centennial Garden Foundation President, Mike McCloud, to appoint a team
to plan for this event and Mike asked Gary Ritchie to lead the team.
Several meeting were held and plans were developed for a renovated
garden. These were presented to the Olympia Tumwater Board of Directors
and the project architects. The plans were approved in early 2001. These
called for a completely revised garden to include a small visitor’s
center, a head house, and other very attractive amenities.
Unfortunately, owing to the stock market decline, the Foundation’s
assets were severely eroded in early 2001 and plans for the renovation
of the grounds were put on hold and remained in limbo through 2005.
Plans were again put on hold in 2005 until the parking lot east of the
garden could be purchased by the Foundation. It remains on hold through
2009 owing to yet another economic downturn. The Centennial Garden was
refurbished in 2008-2009 by the Centennial Garden Foundation (Gale
Fueling, Chairman). Virtually all of the OGRs were removed and replaced
by modern varieties.
On February 12, 1960, the
Harry Zell Trophy was presented to Dr. Burkhart. This trophy recognized
Dr. Burkhart for being the sweepstakes winner three years in a row at
the Portland Rose Show. In 1967 Austin McClintock was recipient of the
highest honor which is bestowed within a district of the ARS - the
Silver Medal. This prestigious award was subsequently presented to
three other distinguished Olympia Rosarians: Dr. Burkhart (1973), Jake
DeHaven (1987) and Mike McCloud (1988). Gary Ritchie and Mr. Joy Ayres
were awarded Honorary Life Board Memberships in the Centennial Garden
Foundation at the 1993 Christmas banquet. At that time, Joy was also
presented with the Bronze Medal for outstanding service at the local
level. This award was presented again to Jake De Haven at the 1995
Christmas dinner, Jack Kiley at the 1998 dinner and Deborah Erickson at
the 1999 dinner. In 2004, Dr. Wayne Parpala and Gary Ritchie were two of
eleven ARS members from around the country to be appointed “Master
Rosarians” by the American Rose Society.
In 2006 Olympia’s own Jack
Kiley was elected to serve as District Director, Pacific Northwest
District, American Rose Society. His term of office is three years.
In August/September 2007 ORS
member Gary Ritchie began writing a bi-monthly column for the
American Rose magazine of the American Rose Society. The column is
titled Inside Roses, and is described as “a personal
investigation into the anatomy and physiology of the rose”.
In 1965 seventy rose bushes
were given to the State Capitol Grounds to replace roses in the Capitol
Campus garden. The Society has participated annually in the Thurston
County Fair since 1982. In 1993 it was awarded a $25.00 prize for an
outstanding exhibit.
Public plant sales were held
in the spring of 1976 and 1977 at the Safeway stores. Exhibition/Novice
rose shows were held at South Sound Center mall in July 1976, 1977,
1979, and 1980. Prizes were awarded to the best novice exhibitors. In
the summers of 1987 and 1988 the ORS rented a booth at the Olympia
Farmers' Market and sold cut roses for $1.00 each. Roses were donated
by members. About $100 (after taxes) was raised on each of these
occasions. This was coordinated by Ed and Eileen Larson.
In April, 2000, the ORS
participated in the Junior League’s annual plant sale. The event was
held at the St. Martin’s Pavilion and was attended by many hundreds of
people. The Society hosted an educational booth and also sold miniature
roses. This event was so successful that it was repeated in 2001, 2002
2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. It was coordinated by Karen
Backman with help from her husband, Ron, along with Pat and Patricia
Ream, and many other members.
Garage sales
have been held as fund raising activities on at least two occasions. In
September 2003 a sale was held at Nancy Honhorst’s house and nearly $400
was earned. Another garage sale, July 21, 2004, was held the home of Pat
and Patricia Ream. Proceeds were over $1000.
In 2006, ORS President Diane
Smith, proposed a new society activity – visiting consultations from ORS
Consulting Rosarians. With leadership by Jack Kiley several CRs made
visits to several members’ gardens to make recommendations and share
tips with ORS members. This event was very popular and it is anticipated
that it will be continued in the future. In 2007 the ORS participated at
the Lacey Farmers Market “Rosefest”.
Beginning about 2001 The
Portland Rose Society and the Olympia Lakefair organizations, have
sponsored a rose planting event in the Centennial Garden. The event is
held during the Lakefair Festival, which is generally the third weekend
in July.
During 2002, the Society
lost two beloved members – Dr. J. M. Burkhart, a charter member of the
ORS, and former Society President, Esther Mathews. Both will be greatly
missed. Mrs. James Gray, 1964 ORS President, passed away during 2003.
Mr. Joy Ayres and Mrs. Marian Seeley, both long time and beloved members
of the Society, passed away in 2008. Wally Difford passed away in 2010
at age 95. Wally was one of the surviving defenders of the Island of
Corregidor during WWII. On May 14, 2011, Mrs. Jane Burkhart, wife of Dr.
Jean Burkhart and the last surviving founder of the Olympia Rose
Society, passed away in Pullman, WA. She and her husband Jean served in
WWII as Army Nurse and Physician, both leaving the Army in 1945 with the
rank of Captain. In 1946 they settled in the Olympia area where Dr.
Burkhart began his life-long medical practice.
